Monday's Broadcast Ratings: ABC Tops Charts with "New Year's Rockin' Eve"

Here are the highlights of the 10 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks last night (12/31/18):

ABC (9.102 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 2.6, #1) was top New Year's Eve draw with its annual specials "Dick Clark's Primetime New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2019 - Part 1" (7.916 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 2.2, #2) and "Dick Clark's Primetime New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2019 - Part 2" (11.473 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 3.5, #1).

NBC (4.849 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.1, #2) then claimed the silver with its offerings "A Toast to 2018!" (4.568 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 0.9, #T4) and "NBC's New Year's Eve" (5.411 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 1.3, #3).

Next up was FOX (2.958 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 0.9, #3) and its presentation of "FOX's New Year's Eve with Steve Harvey: Live from Times Square, Part One" (2.958 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 0.9, #T4).

Meanwhile, CBS (2.740 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 0.4, #4) offered up repeats of "The Neighborhood" (3.167 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.5, #6), "Happy Together" (2.502 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 0.4, #T7), "Magnum P.I." (2.582 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 0.4, #T7) and "Bull" (2.802 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 0.4, #T7).

And finally, The CW (0.635 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.2, #5) closed out the night with an encore of "iHeartRadio Music Festival Night 2" (0.635 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 0.2, #10).

· From 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m., "NBC's New Year's Eve " averaged a 4.8 rating in households in the 56 markets metered by Nielsen Media Research and a 2.7 in 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.

· "NBC's New Year's Eve" retained 92% in metered market households of NBC's most recent comparable special on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016 (5.2), which tied for the highest rating among the 13 consecutive 11:30 p.m. New Year's Eve specials hosted by Carson Daly from 2004 through 2016.

· Last night's telecast was hosted by Carson Daly and Chrissy Teigen, along with Leslie Jones and. Lester Holt.

· Other late-night averages last night in the markets metered by Nielsen included: "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2018" on ABC, an 8.3 rating in metered-market households from 11:30 p.m.-1:15 a.m. (versus the year-ago 11.2) and 6.5 in 18-49 in the local people meters (vs. last year's 8.3); and "Fox New Year's Eve with Steve Harvey," 3.8 in metered-market households from 11 p.m.-12:30 a.m. (vs. last year's 4.9) and 3.0 in 18-49 in the local people meters (vs. last year's 3.5).

· On CBS, a rebroadcast "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" averaged a 1.4/3 in metered-market households and a 0.2/1 in 18-49 in the local people meters from 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. and an encore "The Late Late Show with James Corden" averaged a 0.8/2 in metered-market households and a 0.2/1 in the local people meters from 12:30-1:30 a.m.

· An encore telecast of "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," airing at 12:30 a.m. ET, delivered a 1.9/6 in households in Nielsen's 56 metered markets and a 1.1/6 in 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.

· At 1:30 a.m. ET, a rebroadcast of "Late Night with Seth Meyers" averaged a 1.1/4 in metered-market households and a 0.5/3 in the local people meters.


Here are the highlights of the 14 ad-sustained programs that aired in primetime on the broadcast networks one year ago (1/1/18):

ABC (5.030 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.2, #1) kicked off the new year on top with the return of "The Bachelor" (5.448 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 1.5, #1) and a repeat "The Good Doctor" (4.193 million viewers, #8; adults 18-49: 0.7, #T7).

Second place then went to CBS (5.340 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 0.8, #T2) with repeats of "The Big Bang Theory" (6.592 million viewers, #1; adults 18-49: 1.1, #2), "Young Sheldon" (6.248 million viewers, #2; adults 18-49: 1.0, #3), another "Young Sheldon" (5.990 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 0.9, #T4), yet another "Young Sheldon" (6.034 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 0.9, #T4) and "SEAL Team" (3.588 million viewers, #10; adults 18-49: 0.5, #12).

Next up was NBC (4.200 million viewers, #3; adults 18-49: 0.8, #T2) with new episodes of "The Wall" (4.324 million viewers, #6; adults 18-49: 0.8, #6), "Better Late Than Never" (4.195 million viewers, #7; adults 18-49: 0.7, #T7) and a second "Better Late Than Never" (4.083 million viewers, #9; adults 18-49: 0.7, #T7).

Meanwhile, FOX (2.839 million viewers, #4; adults 18-49: 0.7, #4) offered up the return of "Lucifer" (3.144 million viewers, #11; adults 18-49: 0.7, #T7) and "The Gifted" (2.535 million viewers, #12; adults 18-49: 0.7, #T7).

And finally, a repeat "Supergirl" (0.896 million viewers, #13; adults 18-49: 0.2, #T13) and a new "Valor" (0.792 million viewers, #14; adults 18-49: 0.2, #T13) on The CW (0.844 million viewers, #5; adults 18-49: 0.2, #5) rounded out the night.

In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, averages were: "Late Night," 0.3/2 in 18-49 with an encore; "Late Late Show," 0.2/2 with an encore.

· At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.5/2 in metered-market households with an encore and a 0.2/1 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.
