FORMULA E RETURNS TO FOX SPORTS 1 FOR SECOND ePRIX
Fully Electric Series Race from Malaysia Replays Sunday on FOX
Varsha to Host Coverage as New Series Rolls Into Second of Nine Inaugural Events
Charlotte, N.C. -- Coming off a successful debut in Beijing, the new FIA Formula E Championship sets up shop on the west coast of Malaysia for the Putrajaya ePrix, the second of nine events featuring fully electric, zero-emission single-seaters and the first to be featured on an over-the-air broadcast network in the U.S. FOX Sports 1 carries the race live in the early morning of Saturday, Nov. 22 (1:00 AM ET), with the event replaying Sunday, Nov. 23* on FOX, adjacent to NFL on FOX football coverage.
The Putrajaya ePrix takes place on a 1.55-mile, 12-turn street circuit designed by British architect Simon Gibbons, an experienced circuit planner for Formula One and, more recently, part of the team that designed the rowing and canoeing venue for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
With just one race under their belts, FOX Sports host Bob Varsha expects teams to focus on a continued evolution of strategy and technology.
"Right now I expect the teams are trying to noodle out what it takes to be successful with these cars as they sit in terms of tire grip, power conservation and race planning," Varsha said. "In the long term, one of the key items in the Formula E mission statement that I think has been lost on the fans is that the series is meant to be a platform for advancing technology, with the rewards coming on the race track. Right now, all the cars are the same, but in the coming seasons teams will be expected to push the boundaries and bring new ideas to the track. It will be a true 'run what ya brung' type of competition, and that's something racing fans have been asking for on the internal-combustion side for a long time."
The United States is represented by two teams - Andretti Formula E, with driver Franck Montagny and Charles Pic; and Dragon Racing, with drivers Oriol Servia and Jerome d'Ambrosio. Two U.S. events are scheduled for the spring, with Miami on March 14 and Long Beach on April 4.
The Putrajaya ePrix also is available live on FOX Sports GO, the app that provides live streaming video of FOX Sports content.
