By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

THE CODE (FX, New!) - James McBride's Harriet Tubman-esque book "Song Yet Sung" is being developed as a limited series at the cable channel. Said effort centers on Liz, "a black woman making a desperate dash to freedom, on the run from a torn white waterman and able slave catcher, who takes on one last job - only to find himself in a war against a notorious female slave stealer." McBride himself will pen the adaptation and serve as a co-executive producer. Brian Taylor then will executive produce alongside Kelsey Grammer, Brian Sher and Stella Bulochnikov of Grammnet NH Productions. (Deadline.com)

DOC FORD (CBS, New!) - Chris Gerolmo ("The Bridge") is looking to bring Randy Wayne White's book series - about "a retired NSA agent-turned-marine biologist who gets justice for those in need on the Gulf Coast of southern Florida" - to the small screen at CBS. Said hour is set up at CBS Television Studios with Gerolmo and Jeffrey Kramer executive producing and Rick Rosenthal as a supervising producer. (Deadline.com)

RUSH (USA/Fox 21; W: Jonathan Levine; D: TBA) - Tom Ellis and Rick Gonzalez are the first to be cast in the drama pilot, about Dr. William Rush (Ellis): not your average on-call doctor - he's not attached to any hospital, he's highly discreet no matter what the ailment as long as the client can pay his cash-only premium and the doctor can party with the best of them. Gonzalez then is set as Manny Maquis, "a well-connected dealer, who considers Rush a friend, as well as a client." (Deadline.com)

UNTITLED NAPOLEON BONAPARTE PROJECT (HBO, New!) - Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby) is in talks to helm a mini-series for the pay channel based on an un-produced Stanley Kubrick screenplay about Napoleon Bonaparte. Steven Spielberg is behind the project, additional details of which weren't released. (Deadline.com)

AND IN OTHER NEWS... - John Corbett is the latest "Parenthood" alum set to return to the NBC series (TVGuide.com); Adam Brody will guest on "New Girl" as "a long-ago ex-boyfriend of Jess' (Zooey Deschanel) who's now a married stay-at-home dad" (TVLine.com); Mark Valley is bound for an upcoming crossover between "Hot in Cleveland" and "Kirstie" as the boyfriend of Kirstie Alley's character (TVLine.com); and Pablo Schreiber will reprise his role of sadistic villain William Lewis on "Law & Order: SVU" early next year (TVGuide.com).
