By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

THE STRAIN (FX/FX Productions; W: Chuck Hogan & Guillermo del Toro; D: Guillermo del Toro) - Mia Maestro has joined the cast of the drama pilot, based on the best-selling vampire novel trilogy of the same name. She'll play Dr. Nora Martinez, who "works so closely with Ephraim (Corey Stoll), they finish each other's sentences and stumble into an affair. A brilliant biochemist, Martinez cares more about people than the diseases that threaten them, but she will soon be forced to embrace a new identity as a ruthless warrior." Kevin Durand also stars while Carlton Cuse and Gary Ungar are also executive producing. (Deadline.com)

TYRANT (FX/Fox 21; W: Craig Wright, Gideon Raff & Howard Gordon; D: TBA) - Director Ang Lee has bowed out of the pilot, which tells the story of an unassuming American family drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation. "It is with disappointment that I must confirm I have withdrawn from my commitment to direct the upcoming FX pilot Tyrant," he said in a statement. "It is one of the most brilliant ideas for a series that I've seen and one about which I was very excited. However, after spending over four years making and promoting Life Of Pi, I have recently realized that I need some rest." (Deadline.com)

AND IN OTHER NEWS... - John Barrowman has been tapped to host ABC's new six-episode competition series "Sing Your Face Off" in which five celebrity contestants - Sebastian Bach, Jon Lovitz, Landry Fields, China Anne McClain and Lisa Rinna - take on the identity of an iconic music performer each week while Darrell Hammond and Debbie Gibson will serve as judges (EW.com); and Letoya Luckett, Damien Wayans and Lesley-Ann Brandt have all landed recurring roles on the new season of VH1's "Single Ladies" (Deadline.com).
