Science Channel Unveils Its 2013-14 Upfront Slate Featuring Scripted Drama, Live Science Events and Blue Chip Series

-- The Network's First Scripted Feature, 73 SECONDS: THE CHALLENGER INVESTIGATION, Featuring Academy Award-Winner William Hurt, Headlines Science Channel's Lineup of Smart, Lean-Forward Entertainment --

(New York, N.Y.) Science Channel today unveiled its 2013-2014 Upfront slate, featuring a diverse offering of smart, lean-forward programming; including scripted drama, live science events, and blue chip series. This lineup will continue the momentum that made 2012 the most-watched year in network history and has propelled Science Channel to 17 consecutive quarters of year-over-year ratings growth. Science Channel also is one of cable's fastest growing networks, set to reach 80 million homes by the end of 2013.

The slate is headlined by Science Channel's first scripted dramatic feature, 73 SECONDS: THE CHALLENGER INVESTIGATION, starring Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt. The BBC co-production details the aftermath of the Challenger disaster, following renowned physicist Richard Feynman's (Hurt) efforts to cut through cover-ups and agency red tape to uncover the tragedy's true cause. Premiering November 2013, 73 SECONDS: THE CHALLENGER INVESTIGATION also features a standout supporting cast; including Brian Dennehy, Bruce Greenwood and Joanne Whalley. The companion nonfiction feature narrated by Hurt, THE GENIUS OF RICHARD FEYNMAN, details the real-life journey to find the truth behind the Challenger disaster. This documentary features all-new interviews, rare archival footage and commentary from fellow scientists on the iconoclastic physicist.

Seguing from docudrama to provocative humor, Science Channel returns its accidental social scientist, Karl Pilkington, in the all new series, THE MOANING OF LIFE. Fresh from absorbing three seasons' worth of punishment from Ricky Gervais in the network's most-popular franchise ever, AN IDIOT ABROAD, Karl returns to face his greatest challenge yet - middle age. Science Channel once again will be on-hand as history unfolds with its live coverage of the ISON SUPER COMET - a once-in-a-generation celestial event featuring a comet brighter than the moon - when it arrives in late 2013. The end of 2013 also brings the world premiere series, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING, featuring acclaimed actor James Woods. Woods takes viewers on a journey between the present and the distant future as he explores the emerging technologies of today that could completely change the way humankind lives tomorrow.

"Science and science programming are hotter than ever; from coverage of the NASA Mars Curiosity landing to the discovery of evidence of the Higgs Boson, or 'God Particle,'" said Debbie Adler Myers, General Manager and Executive Vice President of Science Channel. "At Science Channel, we cater to the intellectually curious with the finest slate of science programming that we've ever offered. With an array of new and returning series and specials, our 2013-2014 Upfront lineup is as deep and diverse as it is entertaining."

This Upfront season, Science Channel also brings back a number of its signature fan favorites, such as HOW IT'S MADE and HOW DO THEY DO IT?, along with quirky hit franchise ODDITIES. The iconic Morgan Freeman also returns to Science Channel to take viewers back to the world of the unknown in the critically-acclaimed series, THROUGH THE WORMHOLE WITH MORGAN FREEMAN. The network will continue to offer its popular alien programming genre, featuring its signature combination of science and mystery. Science Channel's flagship extraterrestrial programming event, ARE WE ALONE? returns to the network for a third installment in March of 2014.
