Development Update: Wednesday, January 4
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

ANTICHRIST (ABC, New!) - Roland Emmerich and Harald Kloser ("2012") are set to reteam for a potential drama at the Alphabet about "a young astrophysics student who learns his destiny lies not in science but somewhere between Heaven and Hell." Said hour, from the ABC Studios-based The Mark Gordon Co., will be set in New York City against the backdrop of the Presidential race of 2012. Emmerich will also direct the project, which has a pilot order, and executive produce alongside Kloser and Gordon. (Deadline.com)

CULT (The CW) - Rockne S. O'Bannon's much-ballyhooed drama script has found a new life at The CW and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's Fake Empire banner. The WB originally commissioned a pilot for the project, which tracks the investigation of a string of mysterious deaths and disappearances surrounding the show-within-a-show entitled "Cult," back in 2006 - even casting Matthew Bomer in the lead role - before ultimately being tabled following the netlet's merger with UPN. The revised incarnation, which likewise has a pilot order, is billed as centering on "an inquisitive, young female production assistant on a wildly popular television show called 'Cult' who, after a rash of disappearances and a likely murder, joins a journalist blogger in investigating the rabid fans of the series who might be re-creating crimes seen on the program in real life." O'Bannon, Schwartz, Savage and Len Goldstein then will executive produce for Warner Bros. Television. (Deadline.com)

LAST RESORT (ABC) - Martin Campbell ("Green Lantern") has been tapped to direct the drama pilot, about "the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine who, after ignoring an order to fire nuclear missiles, wind up being hunted and escape to a NATO outpost where they declare themselves to be the world's smallest nuclear nation." Shawn Ryan and Karl Gajdusek are behind the Sony Pictures Television-based project, which is awaiting a formal green light from the Alphabet. Campbell will likewise executive produce alongside the duo. (THR.com)

THE MARTHA STEWART SHOW (Hallmark) - The cable channel is expected to pass on an eighth season of the veteran talk show, citing its growing price tag. "The daytime block on Hallmark Channel demonstrated year over year ratings growth and earned The Martha Stewart Show two Daytime Emmy Awards in its first season on Hallmark Channel," Hallmark and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia said in a joint statement. "That show will continue to air through the end of summer 2012. MSLO and Hallmark Channel are in discussions about potential new programming and concepts for daytime." It's not clear if MSLO productions "Emeril's Table" and "Mad Hungry with Lucinda Scala Quinn" will also be shuttered by the network, which launched said "Martha" block in September of 2010. (THR.com)

AND IN OTHER NEWS... - VH1 has tabled future editions of Drew Pinski's series "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" and "Celebrity Rehab Presents Sober House" for the time being (EW.com); Rick Springfield will guest as himself on "Hot in Cleveland" where he catches the eye of Jane Leeves's Joy (TVGuide.com); Jillian Michaels will depart "The Doctors" after a half season as co-host (NYPost.com); Jonathan Groff is bound for "The Good Wife" as "a plaintiff suing a software company after his sister disappears during a peaceful protest in Syria" (TVLine.com); and Lee Majors, Spencer Grammer and Aaron Hill will all visit "CSI: NY" in an episode dealing with a cold case from the 1950s (TVGuide.com).
