MICHAEL GARGUILO, FEATURED IN "48 HOURS MYSTERY" EPISODE, BROUGHT UP ON CHARGES RELATED TO MURDER OF TRICIA PACACCIO ALMOST 18 YEARS AGO

TESTIMONY OF KEY WITNESSES WHO STEPPED FORWARD FOLLOWING 48 HOURS MYSTERY BROADCAST PLAYED CRUCIAL ROLE IN CASE

Following the May 14 broadcast of 48 Hours Mystery: "The Boy Next Door," two witnesses stepped forward with information that eventually led to formal charges being filed yesterday against the subject of the hour-long program: Michael Garguilo. After extensive interviews with the witnesses by the Cook County State's Attorney's office, charges of first-degree murder have been brought against Garguilo in connection with the murder of Tricia Pacaccio, who was savagely murdered nearly18 years ago in the Chicago suburb of Glenview, Ill.

Rick Pacaccio, the father of Tricia, thanked CBS News and 48 Hours Mystery by phone today, saying, "There is no doubt about it, you guys did good. The informant saw me on the show and couldn't take it anymore, and came forward."

Garguilo will be indicted on first-degree murder for the death of Tricia Paccacio, and is currently facing two murder charges and a rape charge in California.

In a press release, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office stated, "In May of 2011, [our] office, as part of efforts in the continuing cold case investigation, participated in a CBS '48 Hours Mystery' television investigative episode which profiled Garguilo's crimes in California and his potential link to the Pacaccio homicide in Cook County. As a result of the airing of the television program, two new witnesses came forward who had worked with Garguilo at a bar and grill in Hollywood California in the late 1990's."

Correspondent Maureen Maher reported this story for 48 Hours Mystery. This broadcast was produced by Josh Gelman and Doug Longhini. Paul Ryan is the senior broadcast producer. Al Briganti is the executive editor. Susan Zirinsky is the executive producer.
