The Closer, "True Blood" Lead 2009's Scripted Cable Series

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- TNT's "The Closer" was cable's most-watched scripted program of 2009 while HBO's "True Blood" topped the charts among adults 18-49.

The former averaged a stellar 7.691 million viewers for each of its 15 episodes. Also landing in the top five were the USA quartet of "Burn Notice" (7.677 million), "Royal Pains" (7.474 million), "Monk" (6.259) and "White Collar" (6.080 million).

In the key adults 18-49 demographic, "True Blood" averaged a cable best 3.522 million viewers followed by USA's "Burn Notice" (3.339), FX's "Sons of Anarchy" (3.163 million), USA's "Royal Pains" (3.148 million) and fellow HBO effort "Entourage" (2.703 million).

And on DVR, FX's "Damages" got the biggest boost, as 31.76% of its audience came after the day of its original broadcast. It was followed by Showtime's "Weeds" (31.17%) and "Nurse Jackie" (28.92%) with Syfy's "Battlestar Galactica" (28.20%) and AMC's "Mad Men" (27.44%) rounding out the top five.

Here's a breakdown of how 64 selected entries on the cable networks fared in 2009:

A&E - The cable channel didn't renew either of its scripted efforts - "The Cleaner" (1.494 million, #42 - 20.15% from DVR, #23; adults 18-49: 0.728 million, #46 - 19.92% from DVR, #34) and "The Beast" (1.428 million, #47 - 16.88% from DVR, #40; adults 18-49: 0.670 million, #51 - 17.31% from DVR, #46) - as each fell into the bottom third of cable's offerings in the genre.

ABC Family - "The Secret Life of the America Teenager" (3.870 million, #17 - 14.75% from DVR, #47; adults 18-49: 1.939 million, #15 - 17.69% from DVR, #43) remained the network's top draw, followed by newcomer "10 Things I Hate About You" (1.664 million, #36 - 19.89% from DVR, #26; adults 18-49: 0.708 million, #48 - 21.19% from DVR, #29).

Next up was the now departed "Kyle XY" (1.591 million, #39 - 15.78% from DVR, #44; adults 18-49: 0.631 million, #54 - 20.76% from DVR, #31) with "Greek" (1.051 million, #53 - 21.12% from DVR, #16; adults 18-49: 0.616 million, #55 - 22.24% from DVR, #24) and "Lincoln Heights" (1.017 million, #54 - 10.72% from DVR, #55; adults 18-49: 0.428 million, #61 - 12.15% from DVR, #57) rounding out the group.

AMC - Season three of "Mad Men" (2.496 million, #31 - 27.44% from DVR, #5; adults 18-49: 1.235 million, #33 - 31.74% from DVR, #5) continued to pave the channel's original programming roads, as did "Breaking Bad's" second season (1.628 million, #37 - 20.09% from DVR, #25; adults 18-49: 0.906 million, #41 - 23.62% from DVR, #20).

Comedy Central - Animated veteran "South Park" (3.481 million, #20 - 18.39% from DVR, #33; adults 18-49: 2.472 million, #7 - 20.47% from DVR, #33) continued its reign at the network even in season 13.

Falling short then were newcomers "Secret Girlfriend" (1.478 million, #44 - 6.77% from DVR, #60; adults 18-49: 0.999 million, #39 - 7.31% from DVR, #60) and "Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire" (1.426 million, #48 - 13.60% from DVR, #52; adults 18-49: 0.899 million, #42 - 17.46% from DVR, #45) as well as the final season of "Reno 911" (1.438 million, #46 - 13.07% from DVR, #53; adults 18-49: 1.007 million, #38 - 15.89% from DVR, #51).

FX - "Sons of Anarchy" (4.483 million, #11 - 18.20% from DVR, #35; adults 18-49: 3.163 million, #3 - 18.94% from DVR, #38) moved to the front of FX's original stable in 2009, beating out "Nip/Tuck's" fifth (3.197 million, #24 - 20.74% from DVR, #20; adults 18-49: 2.452 million, #8 - 22.47% from DVR, #22) and sixth (2.601 million, #28 - 19.80% from DVR, #27; adults 18-49: 1.777 million, #18 - 21.33% from DVR, #28) seasons.

Next up was "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" (2.234 million, #33 - 19.70% from DVR, #30; adults 18-49: 1.810 million, #17 - 21.66% from DVR, #27) followed by "Rescue Me" (1.944 million, #35 - 25.57% from DVR, #6; adults 18-49: 1.246 million, #32 - 26.24% from DVR, #14) and "Damages" (1.398 million, #49 - 31.76% from DVR, #1; adults 18-49: 0.671 million, #50 - 33.53% from DVR, #1). Rounding out the group was newcomer "The League" (1.271 million, #51 - 14.56% from DVR, #49; adults 18-49: 1.048 million, #37 - 16.03% from DVR, #50).

HBO - As previously noted, "True Blood" (5.003 million, #7 - 14.71% from DVR, #48; adults 18-49: 3.522 million, #1 - 15.47% from DVR, #52) emerged as the pay channel's top draw, followed by lead outs "Hung" (3.617 million, #19 - 15.48% from DVR, #45; adults 18-49: 2.482 million, #6 - 15.39% from DVR, #53) and "Entourage" (3.460 million, #21 - 21.01% from DVR, #18; adults 18-49: 2.703 million, #5 - 21.16% from DVR, #30).

Landing in the middle of HBO's pack were "Big Love" (2.320 million, #32 - 17.41% from DVR, #38; adults 18-49: 1.448 million, #27 - 19.06% from DVR, #37), "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (1.518 million, #41 - 22.99% from DVR, #10; adults 18-49: 0.888 million, #43 - 25.56% from DVR, #16) and freshman entry "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" (1.268 million, #52 - 10.57% from DVR, #56; adults 18-49: 0.477 million, #58 - 13.42% from DVR, #55).

And finally, two other newcomers - "Bored to Death" (0.948 million, #56 - 18.35% from DVR, #34; adults 18-49: 0.583 million, #57 - 17.67% from DVR, #44) and "Eastbound & Down" (0.925 million, #57 - 20.22% from DVR, #22; adults 18-49: 0.745 million, #45 - 18.93% from DVR, #39) - as well as the second (and now final) season of "Flight of the Conchords" (0.847 million, #60 - 21.49% from DVR, #14; adults 18-49: 0.647 million, #53 - 20.56% from DVR, #32) rounded out the network's scripted offerings.

Lifetime - "Army Wives" once again served as the network's flagship drama (4.407 million, #13 - 16.86% from DVR, #41; adults 18-49: 2.040 million, #14 - 22.40% from DVR, #23) while comedies "Sherri" (0.859 million, #59 - 14.09% from DVR, #50; adults 18-49: 0.434 million, #60 - 17.05% from DVR, #47) and "Rita Rocks" (0.543 million, #63 - 7.55% from DVR, #59; adults 18-49: 0.296 million, #63 - 11.15% from DVR, #58) lagged significantly behind.

Showtime - Veterans "Dexter" (2.166 million, #34 - 19.71% from DVR, #29; adults 18-49: 1.356 million, #30 - 19.10% from DVR, #36) and "Weeds" (1.524 million, #40 - 31.17% from DVR, #2; adults 18-49: 0.985 million, #40 - 32.49% from DVR, #2) remained the pay channel's top draws in 2009 with "Nurse Jackie" (1.314 million, #50 - 28.92% from DVR, #3; adults 18-49: 0.722 million, #47 - 29.09% from DVR, #8) taking the bronze spot.

Filling out its roster were "Californication" (0.981 million, #55 - 19.47% from DVR, #32; adults 18-49: 0.603 million, #56 - 19.24% from DVR, #35), "The Tudors" (0.779 million, #61 - 21.05% from DVR, #17; adults 18-49: 0.334 million, #62 - 32.34% from DVR, #3) and the final season of "The L Word" (0.642 million, #62 - 17.91% from DVR, #36; adults 18-49: 0.461 million, #59 - 18.22% from DVR, #41).

Syfy - "Warehouse 13" (3.933 million, #16 - 21.41% from DVR, #15; adults 18-49: 1.622 million, #24 - 26.20% from DVR, #15) quickly established itself as the frontrunner on the newly rebranded channel, followed by "Eureka" (3.148 million, #25 - 25.35% from DVR, #7; adults 18-49: 1.384 million, #29 - 29.55% from DVR, #7).

Less successful were the launch of "Stargate Universe" (2.574 million, #29 - 22.73% from DVR, #11; adults 18-49: 1.433 million, #28 - 27.42% from DVR, #10) and the final season of "Battlestar Galactica" (2.550 million, #30 - 28.20% from DVR, #4; adults 18-49: 1.710 million, #22 - 32.28% from DVR, #4).

TBS - Tyler Perry lead the cable channel in 2009 with his offerings "House of Payne" (3.015 million, #26 - 5.94% from DVR, #61; adults 18-49: 1.633 million, #23 - 5.88% from DVR, #61) and "Meet the Browns" - season one (3.439 million, #22 - 5.87% from DVR, #62; adults 18-49: 1.884 million, #16 - 5.47% from DVR, #63) and two (2.906 million, #27 - 5.68% from DVR, #63; adults 18-49: 1.515 million, #26 - 5.61% from DVR, #62).

Not so lucky were the departing "The Bill Engvall Show" (1.621 million, #38 - 17.21% from DVR, #39; adults 18-49: 0.860 million, #44 - 21.98% from DVR, #26) as well as season three of "My Boys" (1.478 million, #43 - 23.07% from DVR, #9; adults 18-49: 1.125 million, #36 - 26.40% from DVR, #13) and "10 Items or Less" (0.914 million, #58 - 8.75% from DVR, #58; adults 18-49: 0.657 million, #52 - 9.74% from DVR, #59).

TNT - "The Closer" (7.691 million, #1 - 13.96% from DVR, #51; adults 18-49: 2.382 million, #9 - 18.60% from DVR, #40), as previously noted, lead all scripted cable series. A distant second place then went to "Leverage" (4.508 million, #9 - 22.18% from DVR, #12; adults 18-49: 1.764 million, #19 - 28.23% from DVR, #9) followed by the just launched "Men of a Certain Age" (4.506 million, #10 - 0.00% from DVR, #64; adults 18-49: 1.746 million, #20 - 0.00% from DVR, #64). (Note that Live+7 numbers have yet to come in for the Ray Romano-led series.)

Next up was newcomer "HawthoRNe" (4.005 million, #14 - 15.28% from DVR, #46; adults 18-49: 1.611 million, #25 - 18.06% from DVR, #42) with "Raising the Bar" (3.961 million, #15 - 15.88% from DVR, #43; adults 18-49: 1.210 million, #35 - 16.61% from DVR, #49) and "Saving Grace" (3.668 million, #18 - 16.58% from DVR, #42; adults 18-49: 1.221 million, #34 - 16.95% from DVR, #48) also falling in the middle of the pack.

Last, but not least, "Dark Blue" (3.288 million, #23 - 20.80% from DVR, #19; adults 18-49: 1.253 million, #31 - 22.11% from DVR, #25) and the short-lived "Trust Me" (1.477 million, #45 - 20.11% from DVR, #24; adults 18-49: 0.682 million, #49 - 23.17% from DVR, #21) rounded out the Turner-owned group.

USA - Thursday entries "Burn Notice" (7.677 million, #2 - 19.58% from DVR, #31; adults 18-49: 3.339 million, #2 - 26.83% from DVR, #12) and "Royal Pains" (7.474 million, #3 - 20.28% from DVR, #21; adults 18-49: 3.148 million, #4 - 25.16% from DVR, #17) claimed the top spots for USA, followed by the final season of "Monk" (6.259 million, #4 - 17.43% from DVR, #37; adults 18-49: 2.212 million, #12 - 24.14% from DVR, #19).

The recently bowed "White Collar" (6.080 million, #5 - 21.92% from DVR, #13; adults 18-49: 2.240 million, #11 - 27.10% from DVR, #11) also fared well, as did season four of "Psych" (5.126 million, #6 - 24.99% from DVR, #8; adults 18-49: 2.266 million, #10 - 30.58% from DVR, #6). Filling out USA's lineup were Sunday occupants "In Plain Sight" (5.001 million, #8 - 19.78% from DVR, #28; adults 18-49: 2.074 million, #13 - 24.30% from DVR, #18) and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" (4.447 million, #12 - 10.86% from DVR, #54; adults 18-49: 1.730 million, #21 - 14.39% from DVR, #54).

VH1 - "Free Radio" (0.292 million, #64 - 9.93% from DVR, #57; adults 18-49: 0.211 million, #64 - 13.27% from DVR, #56), the channel's sole scripted offering, didn't register with viewers in its second season.
