Development Update: January 11
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

AMY COYNE (FOX, New!) - Kevin Falls ("The West Wing") has scored a pilot production order from FOX for a new drama about a young woman who inherits her father's sports agency business following his sudden death. Said event forces her to come up with creative ways to run the agency in order to survive in the testosterone-pumped environment. The project, which is being likened to "Ally McBeal" meets "Jerry Maguire," is set up at 20th Century Fox Television.

COP SHOW (ABC, New!) - Modern Humorist founders Michael Colton and John Aboud are developing a new single-camera comedy at the Alphabet, full details of which weren't available. The project nevertheless is set up at Principato-Young Entertainment ("Reno 911").

FABULOUS (HBO, New!) - Writer Michael Elliot ("Like Mike") and hip-hop producer Andre Harrell are developing a new one-hour drama at the pay channel about a multi-millionaire and his close circle of friends as they sail through the world of showbiz while navigating the rough underbelly of hip-hop. The "Entourage"-esque project will be written and executive produced by the pair with 3 Arts' Stephanie Davis, Steven Greener and Howard Klein also serving as executive producers.

OPERATION: DESERT SANDS (HBO, New!) - Actor/writer Dave Thomas ("Grace Under Fire") is developing a new comedy at the pay channel based on the true story of the 300 or so Army Engineers who were sent to Iraq in 2003 to dispose of Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction and subsequently were transferred to a remote military base with no orders and nothing to do. The project, which Thomas will co-write with Tim Hedrick for HBO Independent Productions, would then pick up at that point and show how they occupied their time. The pair will also executive produce along with David Tochterman.

RENO 911 (Comedy Central) - Peter Principato and Paul Young's Principato-Young Entertainment has inked a two-year development deal with NBC Universal Television. The pact, financial details of which weren't specified, calls for the company to develop new projects for the studio and most likely for the Peacock itself.

SCHOOL OF LIFE (ABC Family, New!) - The telefilm, which stars Ryan Reynolds, David Paymer and John Astin is set to premiere Friday, February 18 at 8:00/7:00c.

TEACH'S LOUNGE (Comedy Central, New!) - Matt Ballard, Chris Crockett and David Wain ("Wet Hot American Summer") are developing a new improv comedy at the cable channel. No other details were given about the project, which is set up at Principato-Young Entertainment ("Reno 911").

UNTITLED BARRY BONDS PROJECT (Showtime, New!) - Writer Adam Fierro ("The Shield") and director John Ridley ("Three Kings") are shepherding a new telefilm at the pay channel about the steroids scandal surrounding San Francisco Giants player Barry Bonds. The project is based on Jonathan Littman's Playboy article "Gunning for the Big Guy" and will be executive produced by Ridley's International Famous Players Radio Picture banner. Littman himself will co-produce and consult on the project, with Picture's Marit Weisenberg serving as an associate producer. The telefilm, like the article, will detail the alleged conspiracy between executives at nutritional supplements company Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative and Bonds' personal trainer Greg Anderson to distribute human growth hormone, testosterone cream and a designer steroid called THG to star athletes.
